Bespoke Vessels

The bespoke form: when the wood wears itself

How to make the most of the inherent character of my material?  Completely symmetrical turned forms often obliterate the very elements that intrigue me in the rough burl. I’ve discovered various strategies to solve this dilemma.

Choices of technique and shape are deeply informed by the inherent physicality of the material. As I carve, I ‘tailor’ the form to the specifications of the material. My role is as much scribe as sculptor—taking dictation from these native hardwood burls.

I translate and preserve both the material and my interpretation of its potential: the richness of grain, the fullness of form and the voice of the maker.

These forms stand prominently in the continuum of vessels which have been ‘tailored’ to the idiosyncracies of the burl from which they are formed.
