Description
2010: A large yellow birch hollow was smoothed on the inside and carved on the outside with four panels, each with different levels of completion. One panel is the layout drawn in permanent marker, with subsequent panels more finished. The fourth panel is full carved to resemble a knitted texture.
What began as a notion of a large-scale carved/knitted cylinder collided with reality. Should I spent several more months on it? Now it’s a lesson: layout in crayon, rough, fine and finished carving forever in progress.

2019: David Holzapfel decided to use this piece as the base for a glass topped table. He sanded and finished it with Watco oil finish. Pyrography tracing of the original marker lines for better permanence.
