2002

Three rectangular basswood panels and a triangular basswood base were carved, perforated and sewn together with waxed linen twine. The design applied by texturing and woodburning was adapted from a pattern for a sumptuous gold-embellished velvet fabric made in Renaissance Italy. This design is heavily influenced by the abstract sinuous geometry perfected in Arabia and Persia which reached Europe via the crossroad of Venice and Florence.

In this adaptation, the three panels are rendered to read more like flying carpets, a tip of the hat to the designs’ lineage. The triangular base is rendered as an upholstered ‘pillow,’ with a button in the center, to enhance the visual comfort. I especially enjoy making ‘joined’ forms which are sewn rather than fixed with glue. They have some room to move.
Pyrography. Watco and Minwax oil finish.
