Three Graces Bowl

Beginning as a slice of wood from a very large burl with a very lumpy surface, the three ‘sibling’ bowls were carved from three burled knobs growing closely together. The thinner wood which connected the knobs was carved into the interlocking ‘arms.’ Embodying the continuity of wood tone and grain patterns of a single piece of wood, this set of bowls---three companion ‘volumes’ ---have an unmistakeable family resemblance that three separate pieces of wood could never claim. The title refers to the well-loved and often-rendered Three Graces motif of classical times. The spirit of tenderness, reciprocity and mutual support seemed like an apt object of contemplation this year, especially as I contemplated the centrality of my family and community as the foundation for my work.
The reverse is carved with fingerprint-like whorls. Watco and Minwax oil finish.
