Description

Set of turned and carved wooden beads strung on 1/16th inch steel cable. Central medallion opens to reveal round mirror. Yellow birch cover turned inside and out, carved. Beads turned from walnut, spalted maple, yellow birch burl. Watco oil finish. Small turned and carved maple beads have gilded finish.
The central filigree-inspired pendant contains a mirror, and is flanked by two spalted maple 'cabochons' set in walnut ‘bezels.’ The fine black tracery and multicolored grain patterns echo the miniature landscapes of 'picture' jasper. For contrast, the fabulously figured split-leaf maple burl oval beads are polished to show off their pearly luster.
The Wall Necklace transposes the functions of jewelery from the body to personal space—the realm of furniture/furnishing. it’s an exercise in scale: the locket becomes a cabinet, beads become bowls. Jewellry’s functions of protection, concealment, display, devotion and delight can all be fulfilled on a larger scale.
