Description
For Rage Correctly, I carelessly arranged my models on the wood’s surface, and drew their outlines. Carved and burned, bleached and gilded, a single piece of basswood shows its range as the chameleon of woods.
It’s a tip-of-the-hat to influential colleagues I’ll never meet:
Kurt Schwitters, Karl Blossfeldt and Martin Shoengauer.
This pieces also explores the power of wood’s monochromatic palette, which offers freedom within its restraints: much like black and white photos or radio stories... that gain richness
by what we add to them in the laboratories of our imaginations.
Work for the wall conjures painterly strategies; it addresses the viewer face-to-face. An object placed on a table or pedestal invites the hand and implies use. Each format assumes a hierarchy of object and subject.

I refer to Basswood as the chameleon of woods. This piece exemplified that full range of textures and colors based on technique and treatment. Papery bleached, warm oiled, dark pyrography, gilded. Most of the carving was done with an X-Acto knife.
